Russian gas turbine engine manufacturer Klimov has commenced testing its improved RD-93MA turbofan engine.

The RD-93MA is an improved version of the RD-93 turbofan that powers the China-Pakistan joint JF-17 single engine fighter jet.

The RD-93MA is rated at 9300 kg of thrust against the 8300 kg thrust of RD-93. The engine features and improved fan design and increased thermodynamic parameters of its hot parts to increase engine life and thrust.

To improve the engine's single engine reliability, additional emergency engine start mode and emergency fuel drain system has been incorporated.

Engine also features the improved subsystems like the BARK-93MA digital engine control system, the KSA-54M accessory gearbox system and the VK-100 auxiliary power unit.

Designed for single engine operation, the RD-93 is in-turn based on the RD-33 engine that powers the MiG-29 twin engine fighter, with the major design change of re-positioned gearbox along the bottom of engine casing.
